Came across this interview with Merse (what a player!)

How Harry Redknapp convinced Paul Merson to join Portsmouth (youtube.com)

Made me chuckle listening to him talk about his relationship with old 'Arry.....he was certainly given a lot of freedom on and off the Park!

In his own way, I think JM has also shown a willingness to allow todays players to have greater freedom......and maybe that's part of what makes a winning Team?

......don't over manage the players, but make sure they fully understand that they each have to take responsibility / ownership.
It comes down to one thing and one thing only; having good players.

If the players are good enough, domestically and/or internationally, they'll always find a way to be successful.  The same applies to any sport.

Well obviously you need good players but there are plenty of teams with good players who are not successful.

You need a good manager to get them doing the right things too.

Harry Redkbapp was a great man manager and he would deal with different players differently. He always made sure that the players understood that they needed to produce the goods and if they did that he gave them a lot of freedom.

Some players need their egos massaged, some need their confidence lifted. It doesn’t matter how much ability you have if you don’t use it properly.
Personally I don’t think we made the best signings in the league I just think we signed constant 7 out of 10 players that just got it and wanted to do it for each other.

Also some players knew what their role in the team was and didn’t make a fuss like Saydee.
Team work makes the Dream work Smile
Much like on the pitch, the success of the club this season isn't down to a single figure or just a single game. It comes from the very top. Set up the right culture from top to bottom, build a team not of identikit yes men and women so that each brings something valuable to the club. Not only will you will succeed but you will continue to succeed.

This is what brick by brick means and is something the "Coalishun" never understood.

Spot on Sir!
Mostly Sun, Too right - all our balls fell beautifully into place this term.

Brilliant support and ownership by the EISNERS; a BRILLIANT Manager and support team.

And the whole of PFC taking nothing for granted but all working hard to achieve the common aim.
We are all proud and we deserve to be !!
Amazing what a long term plan can do for a club then allowing a team to be built on top.
Very grounded and sensible people now guiding the great ship POMPEY !
