Our midfield - dsmg - 19-09-2021

Williams: Said it since day one. Looks slow and ponderous, even uninterested. Skilful but you don't get the time he needs in this division. As someone else said his only contribution so far, miss an important penalty. 3
Morrell: Where is this international player? Done nothing yet, going forwards or in defence. 4
Tunnicliffe: One goal first game, looked good. Gone seriously backwards. 4
Azeez: Too early to tell but didn't look the revolution we were led to believe. 5
Reeco: Wonder goal, nothing else except lose control of the ball. 4
Harness: Tries to make things happen, gets in some crosses, wins lots of corners but not much end product. Too intent on little tricks maybe. 6
Curtis: Not really firing yet but our only goal threat bar Raggett. Has the skill to play in higher league but does he have the temperament as seen yesterday with a stupid booking. His understanding with Brown which has been excellent for the last two seasons just not working so far this season. Good goal yesterday, mind. 7

All in all, are we better off than last year? Deffo not in the sense that Naylor mopped up everything, no-one does that now. Suppose we'll have to give them time.

RE: Our midfield - Hammie - 19-09-2021

As you say we need to give them time to settle.
Maybe we have too many options now so they are not going to get a run of games to get used to each other as a team within a team?
It looks good on paper but unfortunately that is not where the team plays.

and having said that, lumping it long (as yesterday) means we'd be better playing more strikers as the midfield is bypassed. Having seen how small Morell is, he certainly will not fit into a hoof it team.

Incidentally you ignored Jacobs, but then so do the managers!

Generally in agreement with that assessment. It’s so disappointing so far that a total overhaul of midfield has still left us bereft of creativity. We can but hope time and games will improve matters.

Thought he took off Azeez just as he was beginning to get the hang of what he had to do ... not sure that was a good decision, but Louis Thompson did OK and is another for your list.

Williams in particular was poor yesterday, far too slow in passing and either far too safe short passes or far too risky long passes with nothing in between. He seems to be the chosen fulcrum for Cowley's passing game, but that means when he has a bad game like yesterday we are stuffed.

True, forgot about Jacobs (and Thompson). On the showing of the others so far, both should start Tuesday.

Doesn’t matter how many attackers you have if when it’s lumped long it goes out for a goal kick as repeatedly happened in the first half. I went to bed for the second half as I had work in the morning but I’m guessing more of the same

I liked the look of Louis Thompson in the Wimbledon game, one of his tackles led to a goal. I would prefer him to Williams any day of the week on that showing alone even though we conceded 5 that night

I doubt Jacobs will feature much and will probably go in January. I have it on good authority that he doesn’t agree with the Cowleys playing ‘vision’.

RE: Our midfield - PompeyBlue15 - 19-09-2021

It's a strange one isn't it. I still don't think any midfielders we let go over the summer would get into this midfield. Naylor, close and ryan Williams being the main three. But this midfield, apart from the first couple of games, haven't been very good either.
