Unbelievable signings - Cunninglinguist - 18-12-2021 Players whose signing for Pompey, set the pulse racing. First three that come to mind, for me:- Vince Hilaire Prosinecki Jermaine Defoe All three because I really couldn't have believed they'd come to Fratton Park. RE: Unbelievable signings - Gerry Hatrick - 18-12-2021 I think the one that really amazed me was Sol Campbell. I couldn't believe that happened - and neither could Sol when he saw our training facilities! RE: Unbelievable signings - firqdays - 18-12-2021 David James always head of the queue as England's number 1 ! Prosinecki remains the most skillful player I have ever seen, the fact that he played for Pompey is incredible. We are privileged to have seen him grace the Fratton pitch. RE: Unbelievable signings - Rescue Dog - 18-12-2021 I'm putting in a shout for Andres D'Alessandro. Didn't know much about him before he came but what a player. Shame we didn't keep him for longer. Also, my personal favourite, Paul Walsh. RE: Unbelievable signings - bluetagagain - 18-12-2021 At the time Paul Walsh, but also the likes of Berger, Merson, James, Campbell etc. RE: Unbelievable signings - essentialmix75 - 18-12-2021 A player that I wish we had a bit longer was, Gianluca Festa. The season we went up he was Class. But my fav of all time would have been Prosinecki. RE: Unbelievable signings - dsmg - 18-12-2021 Corporal Punishmentttttttt, didn’t cost much! When we signed Webb and Biley and won the first game 4-0 on a glorious summer day. RE: Unbelievable signings - Tufnell_Chimes - 18-12-2021 I think Festa has always been my favourite defender, but it has to be Diarra for that how-did-that-happen? feeling. RE: Unbelievable signings - Pedalo_menders - 18-12-2021 First one that sprang to mind was D'Alessandro. What a player! Best player we ever had was probably Lassana Diara. P.s. I think Patrick Berger needs a mention. Scored some of the best goals I've ever seen. RE: Unbelievable signings - Cunninglinguist - 18-12-2021 wasn’t really talking about good players we remember learning to love. I was referring to players who set our pulses racing before they even got here. RE: Unbelievable signings - Cunninglinguist - 18-12-2021 Full marks to Gaff and Jiz, for agreeing with me though. RE: Unbelievable signings - Tufnell_Chimes - 18-12-2021 "P.s. I think Patrick Berger needs a mention. Scored some of the best goals I've ever seen." That volley against Charlton. RE: Unbelievable signings - Jizbag - 18-12-2021 Prosinecki....couldn't believe my eyes!! RE: Unbelievable signings - scouse - 18-12-2021 Whittingham & Walsh a bit before my time. So: Robert Jamo Sol Poison Dwarf RE: Unbelievable signings - Wightblue - 18-12-2021 Prosinecki, Diarra, Berger, Merson, Big Sol, Walshie for me, all game changers in their individual ways. Will we ever see such players come to Fratton Park and play for The Blues again ? Somehow I doubt it under present ownership. RE: Unbelievable signings - Rick Pumpkin - 18-12-2021 For me it was Distin. Had seen him play many times for Citeh due to work, so hearing he'd signed for us was a magical moment and he remains the best CB I've ever seen in a Pompey shirt (sorry Raggs). For a full debut it was Mathias Svensson - had never heard of him but he tore Huddersfield a new one that afternoon, scoring twice as well. For the team we had at the time I thought he was a great player and never, ever pulled out of a challenge. Ooh, Wighty gets in a dig at Tornante. Surprised at that RE: Unbelievable signings - Cunninglinguist - 18-12-2021 Sigh, a thread that ably demonstrates a lack of comprehension, by so many on this board. RE: Unbelievable signings - dsmg - 18-12-2021 Sorry! RE: Unbelievable signings - Hammie - 18-12-2021 At the time and before seeing them play in blue. Super Walshy Merse RE: Unbelievable signings - Pedalo_menders - 18-12-2021 Yes, sorry. Going strictly by the original request, the players I couldn't actually believe had signed for us were: Sol Campbell - absolutely mental that he wore a pompey shirt. Lauren - signed at the top of his game from arsenal. Who'd have known he'd be shit? Merson - ditto except he was amazing. Andy Cole - I remember watching him with Dwight York and absolutely dominate. How was he playing for Pompey?! RE: Unbelievable signings - mikey393 - 18-12-2021 Peter Marinello. He was billed as the next big player. Very skillful & quick but never really made it fromwhat I can remember. RE: Unbelievable signings - Rescue Dog - 18-12-2021 In keeping with the original thread I feel the same as Tuffs for, "....but it has to be Diarra for that how-did-that-happen? feeling." IMO, the best all round player I've seen in a blue shirt RE: Unbelievable signings - dsmg - 18-12-2021 (18-12-2021, 06:35 PM)mikey393 Wrote: Peter Marinello. He was billed as the next big player.
