The competition 2022/2023 - Pedalo_menders - 13-04-2022

Derby
Peterborough
Barnsley
Bolton
Ipswich
Sunderland
Wycombe
Oxford
Charlton? (could be up there, could implode)

Will all be in the mix.

Looking like it's going to be another competitive league... the teams coming down from the championship will be right up there but the ones coming up look shit, at least.

I'm expecting Wigan, Rotherham & MK to all go up.

RE: The competition 2022/2023 - Hammie - 13-04-2022

Needing a lot of points to make play offs this season, suggests a league split into haves and have nots. Shame but great to see a team with comparatively lower resources such as Plymouth still able to compete. Odd that Wycombe now get listed with the big boys.

RE: The competition 2022/2023 - stayinupforever - 13-04-2022

Each year becomes more difficult.Of current league one teams, plus Derby and Charlton, eleven clubs have been in the Prem. It would be very easy to "fade away" and never get back to even the Championship.
It's a fine line between investment on and off the pitch.

RE: The competition 2022/2023 - Hammie - 13-04-2022

I suppose we can hope that being financially very stable we will benefit from a relegated team or two coming down in a right mess, as is often the case for a season or two at least.

We are bigger than all those clubs mentioned, perhaps except Sunderland.

Our aim in this league should be top 2. No less.

RE: The competition 2022/2023 - dsmg - 13-04-2022

Not sure we're bigger than Derby, Ipswich or Charlton. Deffo not than Sunderland although our trophy cabinet is fuller.

RE: The competition 2022/2023 - Pedalo_menders - 13-04-2022

Forgot include Sheff Wed's in that list. So you've got one more to add to the pile! So about 10 teams + Pompey.

RE: The competition 2022/2023 - Hammie - 13-04-2022

Perhaps some of our fans need to have a think about that list.
If Ipswich, Sheff Weds, Sunderland, Bolton, Derby, Charlton and the like are struggling to get back to the Champ. It might not be quite so straightforward for Pompey.
In my time, they have all been lower than us and all been higher than us, but all have grounds that were rebuilt when there was govt money available. Our previous owners missed the boat big time on that.
Realistically, we are all in there with the likes of Brighton, Palace, Blackburn.
We will have times at the top level but mostly within a league of the 2nd tier. One either way.

Bigger in what sense?!?

RE: The competition 2022/2023 - Hammie - 13-04-2022

Would their fans see us as bigger than them?

RE: The competition 2022/2023 - dsmg - 13-04-2022

How do you measure big, Blue Army? We have the sixth highest average attendance in League 1 this year. We've won four major competitions, two leagues and two cups but Sunderland have won 8, Sheff Wed 7, Bolton 4, Derby 3, Ipswich 3. It's all very relative.

RE: The competition 2022/2023 - BlueArmy - 14-04-2022

We are a huge club. We would be averaging top 2 or 3 in this league attendance wise with a bigger ground. If we were doing well we would be getting over 20,000 every game in this league easily.

Hopefully the capacity can be increased significantly in the next year or two.

Tomorrow is a almost a sellout. Many people won't be able to go and a lot of people who will want to buy tickets will want to sit together, and they currently can't due to the capacity restrictions.

Only Sunderland are as big or bigger than us in this league currently.

Most fans see us as a big club.

Both Sunderland and Sheffield Wednesday are noticeably bigger clubs than us. You have got to be on a wind up to be continually spouting this "we are massive" böllocks.

It's an opinion and no windup at all.

Sheffield Wednesday are not bigger than us, and I know that having lived and worked in Sheffield. They are getting 20k and doing well in the league. We would too in their position. The blades are bigger than Wednesday.
