Guy Whittingham's record... - PompeyDB - 02-05-2022

... 42 goals in a tier 2 season has finally been beaten. It's testament to Guy and our team from back then how long the record stood.

Corporal Punishment will always be a legend in these parts!

Oh for a season like that! One of the most entertaining I can recall.

Brilliant as it was for GW to bang in 42 league goals in a season, it never was anywhere close to the record!

A bloke from Middlesbrough scored 59 in division 2 back in the 1920s and I'm sure many others exceeded 42 between then and GW's epic season.

Just as football existed before the Premier League, the other divisions have been around for many decades as well.

Imagine how many Pitman would have scored if he'd been playing with a CF like Hirst!

or a winger like Hilaire who was so expert at gaining free kicks and pens

Imagine the bed wetting if we tried to sign someone out of the army now.

To be fair, Whitts had most of a season at Yeovil before we signed him, scoring a bucket-load of goals as a part-timer while still in the Army. Not quite the out and out gamble you might think

And what division were they in? Non-league! Exactly the point I was making about the club currently looking at non-league players.

Yeovil were always a decent non league side in the days when it was very hard to get into the league at all.

Very true. They were the nominated club for election into the Football League on numerous occasions but the Old Boys Club of the League always re-elected the existing clubs. A lot was to do with geography. The league in those days was dominated by Northern clubs who didn't want any more trips to the West Country than they had to.

RE: Guy Whittingham's record... - Hammie - 07-05-2022

Rochdale, Crewe and one or two others each season from my memory.

RE: Guy Whittingham's record... - Kingo - 10-05-2022

Stockport, Hartlepool, Halifax always thereabouts

RE: Guy Whittingham's record... - Isaac Hunt - 11-05-2022

Swindon and Peterborough were non league before election as I recall.
Or was it Peterborough managed by George Swindon. I get confused

RE: Guy Whittingham's record... - Hammie - 11-05-2022

Hereford too until a memorable cup win

RE: Guy Whittingham's record... - Theyak2 - 20-05-2022

He scored 20 in a season before the record breaking season and that's with half the season out!
