I did not

RE: 1966 - Pangus - 16-11-2022

I remember watching it on TV live with Kenneth Wolstenholme commentating, at my future in-laws' house. My then girl friend went out shopping with her mum, leaving me with her dad who was almost completely deaf. I spent the afternoon shouting loudly to him to explain what was going on, who had scored etc, as he clearly couldn't hear the commentary. I still don't know whether the ball was over the line for Hurst's dodgy goal, at the time I didn't think it was.

The first and only time that I have watched this game all the way through was during lockdown. I enjoyed it.

The main 2 things that struck me were:

1) Wasn't the game a lot slower then
2) What a superb player Ballie was. Alan Ball was as good as any player on the pitch (much more than a 'fetcher and carrier' for Bobby Charlton as he once modestly described himself)

I was in a pram in the garden, with my back to the window. Now by far the best way to watch England.

We must be virtually the same age.
As regards AB, reading several ex players' biographies, everyone managed by him agrees on one thing and that is his ability on the pitch with the ball, even when he had lost his pace and gained a lot of weight.

I was almost 10 and remember going to the shops to get more lemonade and crisps for the Dads who were watching it in our house. I missed the last 20 mins .

I saw this in Cumberland at my grandad's place remember winning and the whole place erupted when Hurst scored the fourth,
we had some incredible players then, Banks, Charlton, Ball, Hurst, Moore. I'm not so optimistic for the current team though

In the services and standing on an RAF (aircraft ) pan in the middle east.

Someone managed to pick up radio coverage on a German station, and luckily one of our number was fluent.

My mate was big West Ham from Chelmsford so at the end of shift at 2200 there was mega celebration in the NAAFI - happy days !

RE: 1966 - briefcase_wanchor - 17-11-2022

Firqdays may be our eldest poster

RE: 1966 - Jizbag - 17-11-2022

I remember kicking a small blue football around in the garden...I was 5.

RE: 1966 - Lt Dan - 17-11-2022

I was 5 and watched the final on the TV in the local pub, with my parents. Have to admit that my main memories of the day are: playing with my Willie and winning the jackpot on the fruit machine (in thrupenny bits).  Smile

RE: 1966 - Tomsk - 17-11-2022

The first world cup I just about remember is '74, particularly Holland and Cruyff, and Brazil wearing blue and being dirty bastards.

RE: 1966 - Deebo - 18-11-2022

Late back from training at the rowing club I watched the first half on a tv in a Rediffusion shop window in a completely empty High Street before running home at half time for the second half and extra time.

RE: 1966 - foxleyblue - 18-11-2022

I was 18 and watched it with a bunch of mates on a  B&W TV.
