Sparkes - stayinupforever - 23-09-2023

I said to my neighbour at the game that Sparkes is not a left back. He reminds me of Matt Taylor in that respect.

Personally he reminds me of nothing like Matty Taylor. Matty Taylor was a fantastic wing back and player whereas IMO, Sparkes is average.
About the only thing they have in common is that neither could tackle.

As a winger, I didn't think Matt was the same after his heel spur. Evolved his game after. Some cracking dead balls and those two lobs will live long in the memory. Resilience was second to none too.

More smash than lob

That's actually what I meant but didn't make it clear! He couldn't tackle.

I'd agree he didn't look much like a left back yesterday but he has played most of his career there, and attracted attention from big clubs as a left back.   I don't think we should rush to conclusions from one game, especially one which he started with a mistake that may have affected him more than it should have.

Also a youngish player, lots have struggled to do well at Fratton Park after an initial mistake.
I started as an active supporter, watching Colin Sullivan take a hell of a lot of stick. But he stuck at it and eventually turned the crowd around.
Hopefully Sparkes can do the same.
