Paul Downing - Pangus - 06-04-2021

It looks likely that Raggett may miss part, if not all, of the rest of the season, which is a major blow. The only obvious replacement is Nicolaisen, while I suppose Bolton could fill in although he is essentially a full back.

Surely Downing who is here on a 3-year contract must now come into the reckoning, after being totally and inexplicably ignored by Jackett. He is a specialist centre half. His record speaks for itself.

The club website sums up his pre-Pompey career: Making almost 200 appearances with Walsall in League One, then after a decent stint at MK Dons he followed that up with being part of the Blackburn League One promotion side, and then with 22 games on loan at Doncaster.

It will be interesting to see if Cowley follows the Jackett line on Downing. When he arrived he said that 'every players starts with me with a clean slate'.

Naylor can play there too but Nico looks a shoe-in

Naylor moving back to CB again is far more likely IMO under the Cowleys than KJ because he just does not have the natural  passing ability needed to play the Cowley system effectively.

I would dispute the word ‘inexplicably’ given his rare performances have been of a desperately low standard. This could in part be due to being given few chances and having his confidence wrecked, but it could be because he is a very poor player.

Haha I was about to post the same thing Forever. Downing has been a major contributor to some of the worst performances I've seen from a Pompey team in living memory. A key pillar of the defensive tripod of doom: Downing, Raggett & Bolton.

He is absolutely awful at football.

Bolton acquitted himself pretty well, earlier in the season.

Bolton has had a few shockers but so has Whatmough. He has also shown some class and character and I would back him under the guidance of the Cowleys.

Haha great minds and all that! I’ll concede Raggett is totally committed .. just not very good, and Bolton has stepped up more than I ever expected.. but remains pretty poor IMO...but Downing is a lost cause from what I’ve seen of him.
