bodies in the box - Hammie - 11-09-2021

We ended up sitting just behind the goal today. It became more and more obvious as the game went on that when we had someone looking up to put a ball in the box (corners included bizarrely) there were one or even no pompey shirts to aim at.
No wonder the final ball is not working if you are trying to pick one attacker out of 6 or even 8 defending players.
On corners we have a genuine threat in Raggett but get all fancy and leave him out side the box.

Very similar to how England played against Poland. So many times Kane was the only England player in their box and rather than cross it we passed backwards and square. When Poland did attack they put in decent crosses one of which led to their goal. They even had a spare man unmarked at the far post just in case the bloke who headed it in had missed it!

Pompey and England seem fixated by this modern approach rather than the old fashioned get it to the byeline, a few midfielders pile into the penalty area and in comes the cross.

Because football's moved on don't you know. It's no longer cool to score a goal by flinging a cross in and getting a head on it or piling bodies in the box and firing a scrappy one in the net, it has to be tippy tappy short fast passes with accuracy and pace the main feature. Unfortunately we don't have the players to do that. Hence we're not playing to our strengths whatever they are.

a man at the back post, how very dare they!
If Pompey had wingers who simply came in late at the back post for the last half dozen years or more we would have a lot more goals and a lot less frustration.
Ben Davies seemed to start it, great deep crosses, NEVER anyone there!

Nowadays l, Football is awash with athletes that don't appreciate the basics when it comes to taking up positions. You have to back to the late 90s before a ball did most of the work.

I blame Wenger

Jackett always said he wanted his two wide men to arrive at the far post and both Curtis and Lowe did that reeasonably successfully for a while. Curtis still does, but his heading there is not a strength in his game.
