Goodpoints made by both Pompey Red & Deep Blue. The answer I believe is somewhere in the middle. Yes, our level really should be at Championship but we have No right to that claim. The Eisner's came in when we needed financial help. I believe that looked at Reading first decided it was a too expensive price for the club & much higher wage bill + thry had No knowledge of U.K. football so Pompey being a much cheaper option all round worked for them. Their problem call it naievety was that they trusted too much on their advisors especially with appointing managers. Kenny Jackett looked a safe pair of experienced hands but he was too tired & stubborn in his tactics & handling of players. Pitman & Evans being the main targets. If he'd managed both better we should have been promoted. But at least we won a cup against another former Giant Sunderland roared on by a 70,000 crowd at Wembley! The Very big mistake by the owners probably blinded by that minor success was to award him an extra year on his contract when he should have been shown the exit door.
Eventually after another season of failure they got rid of him after supporter pressure. The Cowleys were then appointed but given very little budget to buy or get in loans. They said judge us after 3 transfer windows which they've now had. At the start of the season we were flying & getting all the breaks with a 75% Win Rate but now down to 25% due to endless draws. There's 2 main factors here: 1) Too many injuries which haven't been managed well & an overhaul of our medical care needed. 2) Perceived Negative tactics - still sticking to 4-4-2 when more flexibilty called for i.e. experiment with 3-5-2 using Wingbacks or other formations. Too relient now on new technology in Div 1.
Yes, the owners have delivered what they said they would & covid slowed us & every other club down. Off the field the ground has improved 100% but that was due to compulsory H&S which should have been in hand far sooner. But on the field things have stagnated or gone slightly backwards over the 5 years. Money doesn't guarantee you success but spent wisely on a good manager & good signings it sure can help greatly as Sunderland supporters will testify & Ipswich are going down a similar path this season.
In conclusion, let's push on in the cup comps to give us a War chest & hopefully the owners will put in some of their own cash. In January, the Cowleys invest that money wisely & we make a hard push for promotion via the Play Offs where we generate more income. With hell of alot of luck & roared on by the Pompey faithful we finally get promoted!
