The ghost of shit transfers past. John Marquis whose move to Portsmouth is the fourth most expensive league one transfer ever is available on a free. He wasn't a terrible player but was a terrible fit for us and we were a terrible fit for him.
Marquis available for free

and he was not good value.
We needed to sign a midfield passer who could put him through on goal. The best we played under Kenny going forward was with a big lump up front, in that time when Hawkins was at the top of his game playing that role we looked very very difficult to defend against. But talking no plan B, once he got injured, we never found another way.

Apart from the 21 Bishop scored in the league this season making him the third highest goalscorer in the division he also managed to lead division in missed big chances with 23, so someone must have been supplying him with the chances to score Our other striker managed to lead the league in goals per minute with 9 goals scored at an average of a goal every 99 minutes (26 minutes fewer than the bloke in second) and also was equal first in penalties won with 4 Just some interesting stats for you all anyway

Watching Bishop's movement and hold up play really highlights how bad Marquis actually was.
Sure he could run around, but his touch was abysmal.

A whopping 6 goals all season for big John. Pretty shit, even for his standards. I'd be surprised if he isn't playing in L2 next year. Unless some bonehead club with more money than sense goes in for him ( I'm looking at you wrexham).

I like to define a football brain as "that thing that John Marquis hasn't got"
And that Bishop has in spades. If there had been anyone at the club when he signed him who had been at the club when he was here on loan we might have been spared his presence. He was only interested in himself and his stats.

He was a good player at Doncaster the season before we signed him, and most of us applauded his move to us. So something went wrong, I guess he was fitted into a system that wasn't right for him.

You obviously saw more of him at Doncaster than me.
And seemingly more than most Doncaster fans who told us at the time that without Coppinger, Marquis was bang average. Which seems a bit generous in hindsight.

Whoever decided to sign Marqmiss permanently after seeing what he was like on loan needs a very swift hard kick on the plums.

Surely he goes back to Donny now. He's finished

One I found particularly galling, years ago, was Mark Stimson. Jim Smith brought him here on loan and he was rubbish. Wasn't even picked for his last game. Come the summer Jim signed him on a contract. He was no better.

I remember seeing a lot worse than Stimson.

We've had a few loans of terrible players that have left me thinking 'at least we're not stuck with them', particularly in the good old days of month loans. Then we go and sign them... Whitbread Dickinson (Carl, not Jimmy).

Was Adrian Whitbread really that bad? Was he worse than Carl Tiler? I didn’t get to watch much Pompey back then but everyone seems to say Carl Tiler was pretty terrible so I thought I would ask for a comparison. I do remember how much we struggled when Fenwick was manager and Whitbread was playing then so he probably was pretty bad but he was in the team that beat Leeds at Elland Road in the FA Cup back in 97. I had a copy of that match on VHS sent to me in the post after we won that one. Matty Svensson scored the winner, great result

AW wasn’t too bad we’ve had worse

Svensson didn’t score the winner apparently but he did assist Bradbury to score the winner and before that scored a cracker himself. Just watched some highlights to jog my memory

Having to suspend belief heavily enough that to accept that Matt Robinson was a professional footballer, let alone one who had played in the Premier League, has left me open to numerous scams and conspiracy theories ever since.

I remember we signed a keeper on loan back in the late 90’s called Andy Petterson. He played really well on loan then at the end of the season we signed the supposedly same player from Charlton (?), only to find that during preseason Petterson had seemingly been replaced by a cross between Stevie wonder and a thalidomide victim. Absolutely shocking.

Whitbread wasn't as bad as Tiler, and yes we've had worse (Andy fkn Thomson).
But we didnt see Tiler be poor on loan and then decide to sign him anyway, which was where the conversation was going. Perrett - I remember after the Leeds cup game there was talk of a £4m bid from them for him and Svensson. Strangely that didn't come to anything! |
