Long weekend in Hamburg for the Hamburg marathon. Big port city, like Southampton, except not shit.

Lovely place overall, really shows how you can combine industrial and residential. Staying not far from the St. Pauli stadium - another proper football cliub.

A cracking place for a stag, too. Lots of...erm...bars and a lively atmosphere.

Wasn't there some link up between Pompey fans & St. Pauli fans a few years back ?

St. Pauli is practically a religion in Hamburg, great community engagement and stretches into other sports as well as football. Saw so many of the skull and crossbones motif t shirts and hoodies all over.

Will definitely head back as there's lots we didn't get time (or were too tired) to see. The course went along the Reeperbahn and running past it is as close as I want to get to that bit, will leave it to the stag and hen parties.

One of the best weekends of my life spent in Hamburg.. a long time ago, early 80s... went over with a footy team from Portchester.. played a local team.. beat them 3-2 if I remember.. despite us all having huge hangovers..
After the match some of the Germans offered to take us to see SV Hamburg play.. fantastic stadium and atmosphere (was it St Pauli then?).. they thrashed Cologne 5-0... not sure if Kevin Keegan was playing then... was about that time he joined them.

Reeperbahn was OK, we stayed in a cheap hotel on the Herbertsrasse.. sex shows were boring simulated sex.. but we were young 20 year olds and loved it.. the local prostitutes hated the English tho...

Great weekend, had forgotten all about it until I saw this post.. cheers teeftwo!

Glad you enjoyed your stay in Hamburg - and the Reeperbahn really is naff, isn't it?

My friends and I have been watching FC St. Pauli games for over 20 years now and try to get over 4 or 5 times a season. Great atmosphere, lovely fans, cheap tickets and absolutely politically correct. The skull-and-crossbones (Totenkopf) is the fans' identity originally, though the club have now effectively copyrighted the logo.

This season has been really good though the team have fallen away since Christmas. There are many really big clubs (Werder Bremen, Schalke, Nuernburg, Hannover and H$V) desperate to get back to the top division and the class is starting to show, but we can't complain!

I'm going over for the last home game in a few weeks. Would definitely recommend taking in a game next time you're over.

I see they’ve knocked down a lot of the older buildings near the main station which used to house small hotels and B&Bs. The sorts of places you could get cheap accommodation and a very late night drink if they had a bar. The area had character.

Replaced them with faceless office blocks and shop units. Everything good gets ruined eventually.

Went there in 1991 and it was already starting to turn into another tacky Amsterdam. The weekend Market down there was amazing.

Shame about St Pauline coz they were doing so well but look like they've blown it.

The Fischmarkt is the place to go on Saturday nights/Sunday mornings.

Three games left. Need to win them all and hope that others fuck-up.

Unlikely!

The last football game I saw, in Hamburg, was the pre season game between HSV and Liverpool, as part of the Keegan transfer deal. That had to be the mid-70's. Some friends had tickets.

Stayed for the fish market too. Excellent few days. Haven't been back in over 40 yrs, just never got round to it!!!
