Good for them. They have been brilliant in reaching the Europa League final. I really hope they win it and keep the Union Flag flying!

Yes couldn’t agree more, I’ve watched the highlights of their games and they’ve played some great stuff. They play in the right colours too ![]()

Play up Scottish Pompey

Must say I've always had a soft spot for the 'gers as they were my fathers team.
They estimate there are 100k jocks out there 20k with tickets 9k of them officially. Surprisingly for Scotland they have a cracking keeper, a right wing back who is often top scorer and a left winger who is a potential match winner. Can't wait for kick off.

The game doesn't appear to be on Freesat. Would that be correct? So much for BBC Alba and BBC Scotland.

Such a shame they only got 9k tickets, less than a quarter of the capacity!

Can't say I'm a fan of rangers or Celtic. Too many racist overtones in their historic squad selections.
On the other hand I like Partick Thistle, don't know a thing about their history, just liked their kit in my 1976 Pannini album. Sadly I never got them as a Subbuteo team. Although I also like Raith Rovers as their Subbuteo team was identical to Pompey!

Hammie, I always liked certain teams because of Subbuteo. Hibs, West Ham, those Bristol Rovers quartered shirts. Did anyone have another table football game called 4-2-4? Loved that too.

I liked West Ham as they wore the same kit as my junior school (Wimborne) mind you my year were rubbish at football but ruled the city at netball!

Same here - the Burnley away kit was my first Subbuteo team, bought from Cosy Cot on Copnor Road, and I always had a soft spot for them. Well, at least until I first visited Turf Moor for a Pompey game anyway. Was 4-2-4 the game where the players were on a sort of wedge base? If so I think my brother had that game, although I was a fan of Big League Soccer and still have it boxed up in my attic along with some random early 70s Subbuteo teams. As for Scottish teams, I agree with the Celtic/Rangers racist/religious hatred which is probably why I've followed Montrose since childhood. For some reason my old man decided it was going to be a great summer holiday towing a caravan behind our Ford Corsair all the way up to Montrose and the only day it didn't rain was when he let me and my brother watch a pre-season friendly that was being played against an Irish club (think it was Sligo Rovers). I swear the sun only shone during the match and straight after the rain hit again.

Yeah, that’s right Rick, they had a funny wedge thing and the rules were a bit complicated but it worked as a change from Subbuteo. By the way, hope none of you played with that oversized ball!

I did, that’s all the was until the smaller one appeared. The GK also used to have his arms in the catching position and not as if he was diving.

I think it was the other way round. The small ball was the original and then the bigger one came. I might be wrong though, it was over 50 years ago!
My first set was clearly bought second hand for Christmas (with hindsight most of our toys were, there were 5 of us) loved it to bits. The players were laminated very tall card figures on tiny bases. Big brown ball, pitch and goals were pretty standard. Probably some classic first edition worth a mint now! I've never seen the like since, does anyone else recall? Just blue and red teams.

I had my first set in the late 60s and that had a couple of large brown footballs in it and the earlier versions also. This thread made me go and have a look at what I've still got up in the attic and there's three sizes of ball plus, and I assume they were Subbuteo, some yellow foam balls too. Thought I had maybe half a dozen teams up there but there's more than twenty, all from the 70s, and apart from obvious teams like Wales, England, Pompey and Norwich, I really don't have a clue what the others are! IIRC, they started with card and then laminated the players to make them stronger. What a great team the Brazil-Norwich City side of the 70's were. |
