All Powell did was point out the blindingly obvious. If you transplant large numbers of people (including white people) into a country, and they continue to live as separate communities, there will be tensions. It was ever thus and it is indisputable.

You can ignore reality if you choose to but that will not change what happens in the real world all the time.

Wow, are you keeping a file on me and the things I say? Ya sad sack! Stand by every word of that, not being as well educated as you teachers, I missed one word out of what I said. That word would be “British” either by right of birth or right of holding a British passport. Those are my fellow citizens, us “Brits” come in all colours and have widely differing belief systems. I am on that team.

As for Mr Powell. There’s never any nuance when the left pick their bogeymen. He was a product of his own times, whatever faults he had and whatever disagreements you might have with the message he delivered, he was not an idiot. As I said, if anything, he underestimated the impacts of mass immigration. Never imagining the scale or volume of what was to come. Whilst it was fair to criticise some of the content he delivered, it should have at least started sensible debate on what we wanted our future country to be. That debate was never going to happen, it was shut down, just as it is today by chucking the “racist” card onto the table. If that debate had happened we might well already have in place an immigration policy fit for purpose. Because one is deemed a racist why is it automatically assumed that the message is wrong.

It did start a not-so-sensible debate in our house. Enoch certainly put the shits up my poor old stepfather as soon as he read about the speech in his Daily Mail. I don’t think he’d ever been to Wolverhampton in his life but he became convinced the IoW was about to be invaded. Back then we had just one black guy on the IoW that we knew of who, interestingly, agreed with Enoch’s message. This only fuelled my Alf Garnett of a stepdad’s paranoia and he developed some sort of complex obsessive personality disorder about it which troubled him for years, eventually bringing on a deep depression and a loathing of reggae and curry. Today, the street’s still much as it was back in Alf’s day regarding the demographics. More litter and cars though — those are the things that bother me.
