This is more true in Britain than most of Europe. As an example back in the mid 70s I worked at C&As as a Saturday job. They pulled out of the UK many years ago but still have over 1300 shops across 17 European countries. Most town or city centres I have visited in Europe seem to be thriving much better than ours.
