For a change there are some interesting comments on this thread.
The manager showed a lot of confidence in his more attack minded players but this was Barnsley away on a freezing night the right time? No, it was a mistake.
There seems little doubt to me that Thompson should have started and it was the best time to risk the diminutive Lowery, even for 60 minutes.
Although options are limited Scarlett should not be starting. I wouldn't mind quite so much if we hadn't been told at the start of the season that he's the greatest thing since sliced bread...he isn't.
We've only seen the best of Morrell since the build up and actual playing of the WC was out of the way.
Prior to his injury Pack was carrying far too much and expectations on his shoulders culminating in an awful performance in the 1-3 reverse against Charlton that proved to be the end for Cowley. Since then the burden of responsibility passed to Morrell. I'd like to know how many league games Pack and Morrell have started together...I suspect not many.
I'm not a big one for stats but I woner if Bishop is the best striker in League One simply based on conversion of the number of chances that are created for him.
Overall we have a number of very skilfull players for a third tier club but that alone does not win you games.
Overall this season was 'lost' hardly before it started because of the Eisners/CEO policy of 'sustainability', Cowley's tactical plans combined with no Plan B and with strange team selection and use of substitutes and, of course, long-term injuries to key players including Rafferty, Lowery, Robertson, Thompson and now Curtis.
Barnsley, as we knew from the game a Fratton just a few weeks ago, and on Tuesday they were well drilled, organised, strong with pace in key areas...regrettably we are not.
It looks like it's going to be a busy time for the Mouseman this summer but we don't need is yet another wholesale 'rebuild', we need to add to what we've got with a quality central defender, an old fashioned hard man an 'enforcer' (after all we all know that oppostion players get away with murder in this league) an attacking player with some genuine flair in the no.10 role and two more forwards all with genuine pace. Oh, and some decent backing from Eisner. The man doesn't seem to realise that he could become a legend if he went a bit beyond his well documented sustainable approach; something that clearly isn't working, and won us promotion.
