Trifle is good  but even better would be that dessert staple of the 1980s, the Black Forest Gataux, now there was a “pudding”. With lashings of cream. The heart attack is well overdue.

Presumably he didn't want his dissertation to include actual examples of bodily harm that took place rather than the keyboard-inspired versions that he'd get talking to anybody under 40.

On the more important subject of pronouncing scones, I feel strongly that it should be pronounced as "scons", but recognise ones right to an alternative form of expression lest you get offended and feel oppressed. Actually I hate scons. I think they taste like gone-off doughnuts. Actually that might kick off a new debate - donuts or doughnuts? Either way, I'm sure this student fecking hates Pompey now.

Black forest gateaux was for grown ups on a night out, possibly following a prawn cocktail starter and chicken maryland with banana fritter main course.

I do remember Sweetheart dessert from the mid 70's quite fondly. Basically a tin of processed strawberries and cream (with a lot of now banned extras no doubt), mixed with an equal amount of milk, stirred and left to set. Better than all of the Angel Delight (even the butterscotch one) in the world.

Back when JM Inns we’re setting the trend  same starter, same dessert but steak, washed down with a bottle of Mateus Rose. The height of sophistication! Like props in a Micky Flannegan sketch!

On a more serious note and back to answering the OP. Sitting at the same traffic lights every day, I see a road-sign showing nothing but the words PORTSMOUTH SOUTHAMPTON.

After a while I noticed only 3 letters are not shared between the two - A, N and R. And also C, depending on how you're spelling Southampton.

Take from that what you will, but you have to ask yourself why any sane person would even think about that, never mind post about it.
