He wouldn't have had a suspension hanging over him .. he would have served that over the next three games, injured or not.

I think that’s right but also that exceptions can be made (which don’t apply in this case) where a player who is carrying an injury but on the threshold of being suspended on the tally up system takes a cheap booking before being subbed so they can serve a one match ban when out anyway. Seem to remember Beckham being called out on this in a euro qualifier. Others too. Any charge for this gaming the system would bring further suspension I guess.
