Wouldn't happen under a republic.

Wouldn't happen under a republic.

Of course it would and has been done for presidents of America, France etc.

It's a personal choice how you mourn. Forcing cancellations on people is draconian and wrong.
A 96 year old figurehead dies and everything has to stop? It's valuing her life over that of many many others. I definitely don't agree with it.

Fair enough but it’s only a game of football and I’m sure the majority of the UK and commonwealth’s citizens would rather show respect for a few days to a world leader who was respected across the globe.
BTW were you going to Barnsley or has it ruined your afternoon on iFollow.

Kinell! She's dead. Move on.

I'm not a royalist. I certainly don't think I should be subservient to anyone else because of their perceived right of birth. I respected her for the person she was but no more than I respect anyone else. I'd take time off if one of mine died but I wouldn't expect anyone else to do the same. I'm not doffing the cap to anyone and neither would I bend my knee in front of anyone else.

Absolutely no one had asked you to bend a knee or become a Royalist. It’s about the country as a whole showing a mark of respect for their Monarch ( whether you agree with monarchy is another debate). I think you and a few others on this site are definitely in the minority as far as the rest of the country is involved.
09-09-2022, 01:36 PM
Unless they start calling off sports events, of course.
09-09-2022, 01:37 PM
But they haven’t though have they. Keep digging that hole classless Bill

The strong debate on this reinforces the fact that this isn't 1901 and new standards apply. Postponing the games was a mistake. And while we're at it, the wall to wall media coverage is overdone too.

Why should anyone have any respect for the position of monarch? The family names of Saxe Coburg and Hanover say everything one needs to know about how much claim any of them has to be a monarch of the UK!

Btw
6 out of ten were still in favour of the monarchy (last yougov poll I can find) It stands to reason that not all of those, who still approved, would vote for a postponement of games. Would you agree? Amongst nippers (18-24), only a third thought the monarchy should continue. So, as usual, it’s the old farts that are keeping it all going.

I feel your pain, and just so you know the royal family have to remain apolitical although I agree they’d hardly vote far left.
Google constitutional monarchy, or maybe be you’d prefer a ruler/ leader/president like Belarus, China, Turkey , Azerbaijan, Russia, nearly all African or South American countries or heaven forbid a Trump America. I’m all in favour of our monarchy but would like it scaled down ( Scandi style), rather this than a president selected from one of the arseholes in any of our political parties. To quote Joni ‘ you don’t know what you’ve got til it’s gone’.

I have respect for her, I'm sad about it, but I resent being ordered to be sad, and for how long.
What with all the football cancellations and other long prepared- for events, like the Tour of Britain, costing people a lot of money after a lot of hard work, there's some anger building. Creating widespread resentment isn't the best way to honour somebody's memory.

Postpone culture, better than cancel culture.
Luckily, King Charles has realised 10 days of mourning is a bit over the top, so he's asking for it to be extended to 17.
In touch with the people

Not only are they only postponed, even that wasn't requested by the Monarchy or the Government, it was solely the PL and EFL that made the decision. So all you miserable gits (and there are plenty on here) might just learn something if you read the tributes from around the world, particularly commenting on her integrity and decency.

Be interesting to see that all these republicans on here will be refusing to take a day off for her funeral and turn up for work instead.

The queen died peacefully in her castle, surrounded by her family, at the ripe old age of 96. There is no tragedy about this whatsoever. So why take away a small joy for people who have experienced hell in the last few years, And have experienced real tragedy? It's disrespectful to the rest of us.

Hearing all this King Charles stuff is all a bit weird. I keep thinking of the one who head his head chopped off.

Coincidentally, the beheaded King Charles l was responsible for reintroducing the 'Book of Sports', while King Charles ll reintroduced sport itself after Cromwell's years. It's in no way his doing of course, but King Charles lll's reign begins with a mass postponement of sport! |
