They bought Tariq Lamptey from Chelsea for £3 Million in 2020 and seem set to sell him to any one of a number of Premiership suitors for c. £50 million (some of which Chelsea will get as a sell-on fee).
A handy c. £37 million profit after sell-on fees and costs.
When Tony Bloom sanctioned the purchase of Lamptey some would have classified the spend as ‘spunking his money’, others as a shrewd investment.
Bloom, like Benham, is a very adept investor and prepared to back his own, and his managers, judgment.
The term is, I believe, ‘Speculate to accumulate’: the key element is to have sufficient experience and business nouse to quantify the ‘Speculation’ element. Something the Benham and Bloom and their management teams have and Pompey’s management team do not
So you are comparing a team in the Premier League, which gets millions in income, to a team in League 1? Well that’s comparing like with like isn’t it?
A few million is peanuts to a team in the Prem, not so with Pompey. Pretty much all our income comes through the gate or from the owner.
I really do think some of you lot live in an alternate universe.
