I dont think we can afford Hirst fullstop. Love him to come back here but think we've wasted far too much time pursuing him. He wants to come back here but Leicester hold all the cards & the fact he hasn't featured in a pre season game for them tends to lead me to think they want to sell. Sadly that rules us out because he would be 1m+ & currently on very sizeable wages which we cant match.
Which is exactly why you shouldn't bother with loan strikers. If you turn them around into being decent players, you screw yourselves over. If they remain crap you screw yourselves over. It's a lose lose. The club really needs to get someone in who has the slightest piece of common sense and can see this.
Loans should be used to plug a gap when you just can't find a suitable replacement. It is completely idiotic to use them as the platform for the first XI
If we got promoted last season and offered Leicester somewhere near their asking price and offered him a competitive contract he would already be a Pompey player so I don’t entirely buy into the premise that loan players are a waste of time in the long term. If the Eisners continue to be stingy however the most you can hope for is a good season and that’s it off they go somewhere else
