I said immune from the more recent rise in abuse - which is at another level to where it was before. Clearly they were able to cope with any abuse they may have got in the early stage of their careers in order to get as far as they have done. We have enough experienced refs now - it's their consistency and quality that needs addressing. This isn't the 70's. Its what all organisations now strive for so shouldn't be beyond the PGMO. Clubs need to demand a higher standard too.
The consistency and quality isn’t there because people are being put off becoming refs due to the abuse.
Treat them as amateurs and they'll invariably act like one. The FL makes enough money to pay them a decent wage and create a professional referee structure. Make them full time so they have the time to improve their abilities to deal with all the gamesmanship that occurs in the modern game. That idiot in charge on Tuesday is some kind of NHS healthcare worker (missed the actual title) so hows he going to get the time to focus on this job? It's almost like the professional game resents spending any money on anything meaningful.
Nothing will change though and the scale of incompetence is such that referees in the professional league are becoming even more remote from the fans than the over-paid professionals they seek to control. That's why the abuse from fans is getting worse. They come across as detached from the fans and without any control.
The non-league stuff is really bad though. Some of the stuff I hear from watching the odd AFC Portchester game towards the refs etc from just the managers is appalling.
