Quote from Cowley "The first two weeks are high volume and we’re trying to build our aerobic capacity."
You build anaerobic fitness by doing high intensity work, for aerobic capacity you should be running in Heart Rate Zone 2 at a maximum, or, if you like, at the speed where you can still hold a conversation. So therefore you have to assume that for pre season in order to build that capacity (which you need before progressing to a more intense workload) you'd be looking at much longer periods of running at a steady pace, something in the region of 45 minutes to an hour at a time.
And yes I agree 60KM is plenty for a footballer but it's not particularly hard work to do that kind of mileage at a steady pace.
My old man once did some training work with Winchester City and brought along some of the girls junior hurdlers he coached to demonstrate some drills. The footballers were nearly all dying after the first 10 minutes! He said he'd never worked with such an unfit set of sportsmen.
And as for the point of being able to run at 10mph for 15 miles, the reason is that in the final quarter of the match you are still running when the less fit opposition are flagging. Sometimes it's not about who's fastest, it's about who slows down the least.
