Yes, we need a huge new North Stand - similar to the big stand at Elland Road.
Never heard it mentioned before, but why not try to buy an extra 10 metres from Tesco's car park? Other than at Christmas, most of those spaces are never used anyway. That would add to the existing 13 metres of spare land between the back of the Fratton End and Tesco. If we are stuck with the current East-West pitch layout (no rotation), then an extra 23 metres should enable us to massively extend the Fratton End and bring the Milton End towards the penalty area to make the ME a decent-sized stand as well.
Where did you get £2-3m figure from? I remember Caitlin saying the cost of relocating the sub station was nearer to £6m. The cost is not the issue though. It’s the time and logistics that is the challenge. The sub-station serves a 1/4 of the city and affects not just peoples homes, but businesses as well. The disruption over what will be many weeks if not months is going to be horrendous. So compensation needs to be factored in as well.
There are about 36 Tesco car parking spaces behind the Fratton End. Although these spaces may not be used every day of the week, this is what the Council granted approval for the Tescos planning application. It’s highly unlikely the Council will consent for an extended Fratton End that results in a significant loss of car parking bays. The club could purchase the air space above these car parking bays, but that means a cantilever extension. Not impossible, but very expensive. You also need to consider the milling spaces and making sure there is sufficient means of escape in the event of a fire under the stand. Truth to be told this is probably what has prevented the club in pursuing an extended Fratton End.
I'm not a civil engineer but don't you build the new substation first, make sure it is working and connected to the grid before turning off the old one?
