Now we've had a chance to look at Dale, he looks a bit light weight, both physically and in ability.

Yep re Scarlett and DC uses 5 subs here all the time. I did think he was taken off a little early, he was the 5th subbed and it was about the 81st minute I'd say. Glad our goalie got up as we didnt have Naismith to go in goal

You can use a sixth sub I believe if it's a head injury.

Cheers all, this is my second time on the ropes with the virus and (thankfully) it's nowhere near as bad as previously. Coming back from 2-1 down definitely helped the recovery!

You should just wish it away Rick. Everyone knows it’s a (cough) hoax………
Seriously get well soon.

What was surprising was we didn’t have any defenders on the bench

Anyone have any news on Jayden Reid? Had a good pre season then did a hamsting (I think) against Bristol City and was apparently going to be unavailable for 6 matches. Well that was more than 6 matches ago so where is he at re his fitness right now? Any inside info would appreciated because when fit he looks a decent winger. Either way we have Koroma now and he impressed me but more competition for places in the side is always good

I haven't seen any mention of him

Am sure I read somewhere that Cowley said Reid was back training on the grass, suggesting he would be back in contention soon. Perhaps when we play our next match in the EFL Trophy?

That cup competition is really good for giving our fringe/recovering from injury players a run out and is really useful for that. I would say the results are unimportant but they actually are when it comes to the confidence of these players. It helps to build our squad’s fitness and makes us stronger especially if we get good results

I don’t think DC wants to or needs to , rush him back especially as he was out all last season with a leg injury.

Does anyone know why we have 2 defenders on either side of the goal when Griffiths takes his goal kick.

To play the ball out from the back rather than hoof it upfield. Lots of teams do it. especially since the rule change about goalkicks not having to leave the area. By having one either side it means if teams want to press they have to commit at least two players forward.

I still don’t like the idea of not leaving a player up by the centre circle when we’re defending a corner, surely someone like Lowrey could be left up there in the event of a break away.

Couldn't agree more, can't understand why nearly all teams seem to have stopped doing this. The only reason I can think of, other than when you are defending desperately in the dying minutes, is to get teams to over-commit up the pitch, making them easier to catch on the break if you get possession from the corner. But you need a lot of very fit & fast players for that to be effective.

I’ve never understood this. If you leave someone up, the opposition have to leave at least one player back to mark them. If everyone is back it just invites the whole opposition team forward. Also, if you clear the ball upfield it just comes straight back if there’s nobody to latch onto it. The other thing that pisses me off is this habit modern keepers have of punching balls that come straight at them. Punching gives you far less control and leaves you open to presenting opposition forwards with easy chances. I’m not against changes that improve the game, these two things most certainly do not.

The own goal scored by Harrison in our play off against Oxford was a classic example of this. The bloke who should have been on the half way line drawing at least one maybe two defenders away from the box is instead under pressure by all the opposition players around him in an unfamiliar role and when the ball comes to him he forgets what end of the pitch he’s in and heads it into the wrong goal. Wasn’t the first time he did it either. Dinlo comes to mind when I think of Harrison for some reason

Probably not entirely his fault as it was Kenny Jackett who told him and everyone else to fall back into the box to defend the corner. He was the main Dinlo lol

Agree with the comments about leaving someone on the half-way line when defending a corner.
I'd go even further - every now and then, try putting 3 players on the half-way line - and watch the opposition withdraw 4 players to cover them! Common sense would suggest 8 defenders (including the goalie) against 5 attackers (no keeper, corner-taker or 4 defenders on half-way) is better than 11 defenders against 8 or 9 attackers. |
