Having defended Danny Cowley in the last few days our CEO has now issued a statement to defend the Eisners declaring, for the umpteenth time, their intention to take us back to the Championship and then ‘be able to compete for the Premier League'
Our CEO admits that there is no definitive method of comparing Pompey’s playing budget with other League One clubs.
In any case, to assess how competitive we are you need to be able to compare with your peers or competition. That creates a dilemma because for a realistic comparison you would need to find other clubs at this (lowly) level that have a billionaire owner, income from 13,000 season ticket holders with gates of around 18,000 and no debt. That’s impossible but a crude analysis, in my view, would put Sheffield Wed and Ipswich ahead of us but only on the assumption they are not carrying significant debt. Possibly Derby as well but that is a peculiar situation having just come out of administration.
He also says that in October, just two months ago, clubs get a benchmarking report which tells you your position although information about other clubs is not shared. If that’s the case why doesn’t reveal to supporters our precise position in order to kill off speculation recently highlighted by Sky Sports. It’s that simple.
