Well, the only good thing about today was that I was home in no time at all and had a free parking spot on a friend's kid's driveway five minutes walk away from the ground. Other than that what a waste of an afternoon watching one team (in blue and yellow) going through the motions while the other team (in black) couldn't rise to that level, even against ten men.
Every summer we hope that this'll be the last player clear-out we'll need for a while, but Jesus H there was hardly anyone out there today who looked like they even cared if they were kicking off next season in Pompey blue. Everyone at the game or watching online will have a different viewpoint but I thought Jacobs perked things up for us while Dale and Tunnicliffe were just shocking and couldn't have looked more uninterested if they'd tried. Why (or how) Dale gets to start every week baffles me. And if Hackett, as the people in front of me seemed to think, would be a great squad player for next season then I think the bar has already been set mightily low.
Yeah, I know the play-offs are still mathematically possible but by God we'd embarrass ourselves if we actually sneaked a place. However, I'd bet my house on this squad being unable to even get close.
Watching the game two things came to mind - the first was no doubt Cowley signed some half decent players, but they're individually good and hardly any of them look like they're good team players. There's a big difference between the two and we seem overloaded with the former and lacking the latter. The second is that I'd bet good money on Scarlett becoming the next Andre Green; great potential but will end up scudding round mediocre Champ/L1 teams or some minor foreign leagues. Either Pompey have coached his ability out of him or he just never was the player we were told he was.
Right then, I'm off to the pub to try and cheer up and safe travels to the mentally loyal supporters on their journey home.
