Rafferty left Preston because he wasn’t offered a new deal, he didn’t choose to leave to get more games. He made 72 appearances in 3.5 years. He couldn’t cut it in the Championship.

If he got picked 72 times surely that proves he did cut it in the championship. That'a certainly enough to be called an established championship player.

Not over 3.5 years it doesn’t in my opinion. Only 61 of those were in the championship and include at least 1 appearance of 1 minute. It says to me he couldn’t cut in the championship and got released in the prime of his career. Just my opinion of course. So why did an established championship quality player who wasn’t offered a new contract move to the other end of the country for less wages and to play in the League below?

To get to the other side?

what ever his past, he was one of our best players this season. And , if he was not perceived as good enough, is unlikely to attract annoying bids from the champ so we lose him.
Difficult for Swanson unless he can play other positions, right mid for instance. He looks well worth persevering with too.

We're a professional football club with an income that makes us the envy of the vast majority of clubs in this league and we need two players for every position in the team. Macey and Isted were not considered good enough by 'Premier League Luton' and were sent out on loan...just goes to show the chasm that now exists between us and them. While I'm here, to date, everyone seems to have passed up the chance to comment on the Mingi situation and the fact that he is effectively rejecting the offer of a three year contract and looking for a better offer at this level or in the Championship. The question is is this indicative of the gradual sad demise of Portsmouth FC or has it got more to do with a problem with our manager. It's a strange one because we thought he was good enough to offer him the contract so it's not based on lack of ability. There again he's been a bit of a problem child since he came here, possibly he's been badly advised, I don't know. Doubtless the truth will out in due course. In football terms it's a strange time of year and we shouldn't expect any new signings for few weeks. However, it's reasonable to say that even the rumours are uninspiring!

I think Rafferty is an excellent league one player who borders on being a reasonable championship player too. He’s exactly the standard of player we need and there will be others like him, who border on being consistent championship standard.
I think Swanson is going to be better, mind.

The Mingi situation is just indicative of his agent being an awkward bastard, nothing to do with anything Pompey have done, and certainly not Mousinho as he was not manager when the contract offer was made, and Mingi has not made himself fit enough to play since Mousinho has been here but still he was open to keeping him.
Don't forget he only got a contract here because his agent created a fuss (threatened a court case?), and clearly he is being advised not to sign the offered new contract. He has proven nothing yet beyond some good potential, but if his career fails (and with only 7 league starts at the age of 22, and having played all 90 mins on only three occasions, the signs are not good) then I suggest he needs to look back at his choice of agent. Happy if he stays, but no loss if he goes and at least we will get some money for him.

Maybe not being picked to play by Mouse is the biggest factor.
Or simply we have offered him what we think he is worth and he (or more likely his agent) thinks he can get more elsewhere. Or he wants to live somewhere else.

Certainly could be accused of biting the hand that feeds! There is a suggestion that Mingi was fit for the last few weeks of the season but Mousinho chose not to pick him. That may suggest that he didn't like the player's attitude. On the other hand, which player wouldn't love to have an agent like that?

Better make sure he can perform consistently then. He performed very well for a couple of games and was then very average for others.
I’d get rid, if it was me.

I don’t really care if he stays or leaves tbh but don’t see any harm in him leaving because he wants to play and isn’t getting reassurances that he will.
