Wasn't he also responsible bringing in a load of Aussies, of which as I recall Aloisi was the best .

He seemingly didnt use any money at all which is why the firm that built the Fratton End pushed us into administration trying to get their money back some time after he left. But I don't remember the players going unpaid under Venables, I thought that was after Gregory Jnr returned - but I might be wrong.

Left us in the shit, took a cool quarter of a million out of the pot, after only 11 months.
Small wonder Alan Sugar didn’t have much time for him. But at least he built the Fratton End, with someone else’s money (and nearly sent us to the wall).

So the story goes, Gregory wanted a controlling stake so he could sell to a then interested American consortium. El Tel wanted 500, Gregory offered 100, they then agreed on 300.
That's not money that came out of the club coffers, that was money that never got put there to start with. Are we saying Gregory would have put an extra 300 grand into Pompey if he didn't buy out Terry? If we are, we remember Gregory very differently.

From memory, we went into administration before the FE was completed and before he turned up. Didn't he take us out of admin for £1? I remember local companies volunteering fitting most of the insides of the fe voluntarily and/or on the cheap. Might be wrong though. There's been so many administrations in my lifetime it seems! I do remember him cruising around fp on match days in his rolls Royce with TEL 1 or something number plates.

Thanks ... I was wrong. I thought it was straight after he left that Gregory failed to pay the players not just before. Whatever, Venables got off lightly for the money he took out of the club when we could little afford it. But he got away with it because of building the FE. Great manager, good football man all round, but dodgy as hell businessman.

‘On 14 January 1998 he was disqualified by the high court from acting as a company director for seven years under section 8 of the Company Directors Disqualification Act 1986 for mismanagement of four companies – Scribes West Ltd, Edenote plc, Tottenham Hotspur plc and Tottenham Hotspur Football and Athletic Company Ltd.[95] The case was brought by the Department of Trade and Industry, who cited instances of bribery, lying, deception, manipulation of accounts and taking money that should have been given to creditors.‘
Great bloke. Salt of the earth. So we’ve established he took around £550.000 out of the club but at least he sanctioned the rebuilding of the Fratton End, by builders we couldn’t afford to pay. How anyone can defend him, I do not know.

trouble is that without the Fratton End and the resultant improvement in atmosphere together with the roofed North terrace we probably would not have attracted Mandi at all.
In fact we would have just gradually sunk down the leagues and gone bust a few more times. It does seem that most clubs built new bits and went bust to avoid paying for them, especially if they missed the boat on the govt money.

I also remember someone (player) at the club saying they learned more after 10 mins coaching with El Tel than they had in their last 5 years. Probably an exaggeration but you get the drift.

As already mentioned a well respected and innovative coach as well as a great TV Analyst who would put most of the current crop of so-called Pundits in their place. His spats with Jimmy Hill were often mote entertaining than the games they were commenting on.
On the flipside, an often unsuccessful and dodgy businessman who was pubilically humiliated by Sugar and the courts. Unfortunately we got more of the flipside. That and Hamilton Thorp Descans en pau Mister

As I said, memory not too good, but I thought it was the Gregory's that replaced the roofs at fp when they took over and tried to impress everybody. As for the fe, it's a bit generous to suggest he got us the new fe. He didn't pay for it and I definitely remember it was volunteers that got the insides filled and got it fully open.
Twitchy probably has a tattoo of tel on his arse. I guess the reason why none of the obituaries feature the business side is that is it wasn't as clear cut as time as a player/manager.

Lots of people who knew him have good things to say about him from a football and personal point of view so fair do's for that. As Cunny says though I won't look back on his time here with affection.

Mandaric bought us because we were in administration and dirt cheap to buy. He wanted to get into English football and we presented and good - right time, right place opportunity. It had nothing to do with atmosphere. Him making comments like that was to blow smoke up the fan base's arse and get us on side. Did he buy Leicester and Sheffield wednesday too just because of their atmospheres too?
