That was a midfield 3 of pack, morrell and lowery! Swap lowery out for Stevenson and let him pull the strings

Haven't seen Devlin yet but his reputation is that he is not a defensive midfielder. But Lowery is ten times a better string-puller than Stevenson. In fact Morrell would be better playing further forward pulling the strings than Stevenson, who is more of a Tom Naylor type player. I'd settle for that if Lowery was unavailable.

And remember my midfield 3 was morrell, pack and Stevenson who will be the creative one in the 3. I think people are writing Stevenson off due to being in a shot forest green side. Around better player he will flourish and will be aloud to play balls through the lines which he was doing in pre season. You can’t play morrell and lowery we lose the midfield with those 2 playing!

Really, really looking forward to tomorrow.
Love 1st games of the season at Fratton. Hope to see us organised at the back and attacking with intent. Good to have a decent club in Rovers as opposition. Should be a cracking atmosphere. PUP

A nervy 1-0 Pompey win for my money and I would take that gleefully now.

Weather is going to be shit so not sure we're going to see much in the way of attractive, creative football. I think Rovers will come for a point and probably get it.

Pack was way off the pace, and Morrell lost playing too far forward in what was essentially a 4-1-4-1 formation, with Morrell & Lowery both playing forward. Never seen Morrell give the ball away so much - he was at fault for their goal and how he got MOTM is a mystery to me. Lowery did at least put a chance on a plate for Bishop (has he ever missed three easy chances like that before?). But we were better balanced in the second half with Saydee playing behind Bishop and Morrell happier playing deeper in a more traditional 4231, and the extra support for Bishop that Saydee gave just emphasised how important it is that we get the no.10 signing right. Liked the look of Whyte and Scully, both an upgrade on Dale, and I was particularly relieved to see Saydee looking quite good and considerably lighter than when he played his trial at Havant last year. Still got legs like tree trunks though. Can see him becoming a cult hero coming on as sub and putting himslef about. |
